We Will Resist , We Shall Persist

By : Alex Chavez

You cannot want change, and not take action. You have to stand up for what you believe in and not allow others to silence you. You must speak truth to power. Yesterday I attended a peaceful protest which involved various people from different backgrounds organizing for one purpose, change. I feel we have witnessed too many violations of basic human rights and a blatant disregard for the truth with the Trump presidency. From ‘ alternative facts ‘ to straight up lying. Yesterday we protested for those whom do not have a voice, for those who discriminated towards because of the color of their skin or because of where they were born. Everyone is born with unalienable rights and any violation of any of those rights should be combated.

The protest was organized, not only to protest about violations of human rights but also other issues from climate change to planned parenthood and from immigration reform to opposition towards the wall. Each issue was vital and needs dire attention. If our Congress representative denies to speak for us, we must speak for ourselves. During our peaceful protest we faced opposition. People attempted to intimidate us and we were told to move by policemen, we were warned but we persisted.

I believe everyone should stand up for themselves. You have to fight for what you believe in, even if you face starch opposition. We cannot allow bigotry and racism to dictate policy, nor should we stay silent when you know we, as a country, are in the wrong. We cannot allow lies and ludicrous behavior to become a norm because this isn’t how our government should be run. What are you passionate about? What do you stand for ?
